Over the years I have tried many an overnight oil hair mask, below are test results of personal experiments and how I found each one to be useful.
Olive Oil – Good on the scalp if your roots get greasy quickly– especially if you put in a few drops of lavender/ tea tree oil. Very soothing.
Coconut oil – Definitely the best for shine. My hair is super shiny and slippery smooth even after shampooing twice. Bonus is its practically fragrance-free! This is the only one that makes my hair feel physically thicker afterwards as well.
Almond oil – a good all over oil, you can mix in essential oils depends to what you want your hair to do. Also rub some under eyes cause its high in vitamin E and it’s a natural anti-age, anti- wrinkle cream.
Amla Oil – Indian Gooseberry Hair oil – the smell is quite strong but its really good just on the scalp for hair falling out (doubly efficient if you take iron or folic acid tablets as well) I put this on my scalp over night and this morning when I washed/ brushed my hair literally like only 3 hairs came out, as opposed to the usual 50 !
Hair oil masks are best done before bed, unless you’re planning on the I-dipped-my-head-in-a-chip-fryer look for the office.
Some people like to warm up the oils for a more luxurious treatment, and its worth remembering that some oils like coconut oil are often solid at room temperature.
Instructions: Pour a little into the palm of your hand and then using the other hand massage the oil into your scalp taking care to cover the whole head. Then take a wide toothed comb and gently comb the oil through your hair. If need be take a little more oil and smooth it into the ends of your hair until it is completely covered. Before bed tie your hair away from your face and lay a towel over the pillow case.
I would recommend shampooing twice in order to completely lift the oil, so make sure you set your alarm a bit earlier. Feel free to leave comments about your experiences below!
